A ceramic coating is not a force field. It is a surface that rewards being looked after.
We coat cars every week in the Oxley studio, and the single biggest determinant of how a coating looks at year three is not which coating went on. It is what the owner did with it afterwards. This is the aftercare advice we give our own customers, written down.
What a coating actually does
A ceramic coating bonds to your clear coat and gives you a harder, slicker, more chemically resistant surface than paint alone. In practice that means:
- Dirt does not key into the surface as strongly, so washing is faster and safer.
- Water beads and sheets off, carrying contamination with it.
- UV, bird droppings, tree sap and industrial fallout have a much harder time etching the paint underneath.
- Gloss holds up over years instead of months.
What it does not do is make the car immune. It will not stop a stone chip, it will not stop a scratch from a dry towel, and it will not survive being washed with dishwashing liquid at a servo. Bird droppings left in the Queensland sun for a week will still mark it.
Wash it more often, not less
People often wash a coated car less because it stays cleaner. That is backwards. A coating makes washing easier and safer, which means there is no reason not to do it every couple of weeks. Contamination that sits for months bonds on regardless of what is underneath it.
Use the two bucket method, a pH neutral shampoo and a proper drying technique. Every time.
pH neutral only
This is the rule that matters most. High pH traffic film removers and low pH acidic wheel cleaners will degrade a coating over time. So will most cheap supermarket shampoos, which are formulated to strip.
WASH is pH neutral and safe on every coating we install. If you want to actively feed the coating while you clean, CERAMIC WASH carries SiO2, the same compound in the coating itself, so it tops up hydrophobics with every wash instead of slowly wearing them down.
Top it up
Coatings do not fail all at once. They wear thinnest where the car takes the most abuse: the bonnet, the roof, the leading edge of the mirrors. Topping up every few months evens that out and keeps the beading consistent across the car.
Adding a layer on top of a coating is not a problem, it is the point. CERAMIC SEALANT and CERAMIC WASH are both built for coated cars and both feed the same SiO2 chemistry back into the surface.
CERAMIC SEALANT is spray on, rinse off. It is not a wipe on drying aid. Wash and rinse the car, leave it wet, then three or four sprays a panel and about 60 seconds to bond. Rinse the whole car down again to spread and disperse it, and only then dry with your Dry Guy. You will feel the difference in how the water comes off. It is the highest return per minute of anything in car care.
Decontaminate only when it needs it
A coated car that is being washed properly does not need decontaminating on a schedule. That is the whole point of the coating: contamination does not get the chance to key into the surface. If you are washing every couple of weeks with something pH neutral, you may never need to do this.
When it does need it, you will know. Tiny orange specks in the paint, usually worst on the lower rear quarters and the front bumper, or a coating that has gone flat and stopped behaving. That is embedded iron from brake dust and rail dust, and it is not coming off with a wash pad.
IRON FALLOUT REMOVER is the fix. Spray it onto a cool, clean, wet car and watch it turn purple where it finds iron. Leave it a few minutes, do not let it dry, then rinse and wash as normal. Treat it as a reset for a neglected or tired coating rather than part of the routine.
The Australian problems specifically
Bird droppings. Acidic and, in summer, baking at surface temperatures well over 60 degrees. Get them off the same day. Keep a bottle of QUICK DETAILER and a clean microfibre in the boot. Soak, wait, lift. Never rub dry.
Tree sap. Same approach, more patience. If it has hardened, do not pick at it.
Salt. If you park near the coast or tow a boat, rinse the underside and the wheel arches regularly. Coatings protect paint, not brake lines.
Bore and tank water. High mineral content leaves spots that can etch through a coating if they bake on. Dry as you go rather than washing the whole car and then drying it.
When the beading stops, the coating has not necessarily failed
This is the most common misdiagnosis we see. A coated car that has stopped beading is usually a coated car with a layer of road film, wax residue or hard water scale sitting on top of the coating. The coating is still there, it just cannot touch the water.
Before you assume it has worn out, do a proper decontamination wash: iron remover, a thorough pH neutral wash, then dry. Nine times out of ten the beading comes straight back. If it does not, that is the point to talk to us about a refresh rather than a full reapplication.
The short version
Wash it every two weeks with something pH neutral. Never let it go through a brush wash. Top it up with a SiO2 spray between the rinse and the dry. Decontaminate only when it has actually picked something up. Deal with bird droppings the day they land.
Do those five things and a coating that was quoted at five years will still be doing its job at five years. Skip them and it will look tired in eighteen months, and it will not be the coating's fault.
