How to Dry Your Car Without Swirl Marks

Most swirl marks do not come from washing. They come from drying.

It is the part everyone rushes. You have spent forty minutes doing a careful two bucket wash, the car is clean, and then you drag a bath towel across the bonnet because you want to get inside before the cricket starts. That last two minutes is where the damage happens.

We see it every week in the studio. Cars come in with a fine web of circular scratches that only show up under the lights or in direct sun, and nine times out of ten the owner has been washing properly and drying carelessly. The good news is that drying is also the easiest part of the process to fix.

Why drying is the risky stage

After a rinse there is still grit on the car. Not much, but some. It sits in the water film, in the panel gaps, and around the badges and mirrors. Anything you press against the paint at that point is dragging whatever it picked up along with it.

A chamois makes this worse in two ways. It has almost no pile, so there is nowhere for dirt to hide away from the paint, and it needs to be dragged and wrung out constantly, which means a lot of pressure and a lot of passes. A bath towel is worse again because the cotton loops are stiff and the towel was probably washed in fabric softener, which kills absorbency.

What a proper drying towel does differently

A twisted loop microfibre drying towel works on encapsulation. The fibres lift water up and hold it inside the pile, away from the surface, along with any grit that comes with it. That is the whole trick. Instead of pushing water and dirt around the panel, you are pulling it off the panel and storing it.

Our Dry Guy XL is 1200 GSM and 90cm x 60cm, which is big enough to lay flat across a bonnet or a roof and drag once. Most people are surprised the first time they use one because there is no wringing involved. You lay it down, you pull it towards you, and the panel behind it is dry.

The method

1. Rinse properly first. A final flood rinse with the nozzle off, letting water sheet off the panels, removes most of the standing water and most of the loose grit. Less water on the car means less work for the towel.

2. Work top down. Roof, glass, bonnet, boot, then the upper sides, then the lower sides and the bumpers last. The bottom third of the car is the dirtiest part, so it goes last, always.

3. Lay and drag. Do not scrub. Open the towel out, lay it flat on the panel and pull it towards you in a straight line. No circles, no pressure. The weight of the towel is enough.

4. Fold to a fresh face when it stops gliding. A 1200 GSM towel will hold a lot, but when you feel it start to grab rather than glide, fold it or switch faces.

5. Do the gaps and shuts separately. Door shuts, mirror housings, badges and the fuel flap all hold water that will run out ten minutes later and leave a streak down a panel you already dried. This is what the Dry Guy Mini is for. It is 40cm x 40cm, so it fits in the gaps the big towel cannot reach, and it stays cleaner because it never touches the lower panels.

Mistakes we see constantly

  • Drying in the sun. Water evaporates before you reach it and leaves the minerals behind as water spots. Move the car into the shade before you start, not after.
  • Dropping the towel and carrying on. If it hits the ground it is done for that wash. Concrete grit is exactly the sort of thing you have spent the last hour keeping away from your paint.
  • Using fabric softener. It coats microfibre and destroys absorbency. Wash drying towels on their own, warm, with a plain detergent and no softener, and air dry or tumble on low.
  • Washing them with everything else. Wheel towels and drying towels do not go in the same load. Ever.
  • Only owning one. One towel does one car if the car is small and you rinsed well. Two is more realistic for a wagon, a ute or a 4WD.

Add protection before you dry, not while you dry

CERAMIC SEALANT goes on between the rinse and the dry, and it is spray on, rinse off. It is not a wipe on drying aid, so do not mist it and drag the towel through it.

Leave the car wet after your final rinse. Three or four sprays a panel, give it about 60 seconds to bond, then rinse the whole car down again to spread and disperse it. Now dry as above. The water will sheet off far harder than it did, so the drying itself gets quicker, and you have left a layer of SiO2 behind that makes the car bead next time it rains.

Do this on a coated car too. Layering SiO2 on top of a ceramic coating is not a problem, it is how you keep one topped up, and both CERAMIC SEALANT and CERAMIC WASH are built for exactly that. There is more on it in Looking After a Ceramic Coated Car.

Hard water and bore water

Plenty of Queensland and regional properties are on tank or bore water with a high mineral content, and that changes the maths. The faster you get the water off, the less chance it has to dry and leave deposits. If you are on bore water, dry as you go rather than washing the whole car and then drying it. Do the roof and glass, dry them, then move on.
