What pH Neutral Car Wash Actually Means

Every bottle on the shelf says pH neutral now. Most of them are telling the truth. It still does not tell you much, because almost nobody bothers to explain what it changes.

Short version: a pH neutral shampoo cleans by lifting dirt off the paint rather than by chemically attacking what is sitting on it. That only matters if there is something on your paint worth keeping. If you have paid for a wax, a sealant or a ceramic coating, there is.

What pH actually measures

pH is a scale from 0 to 14 describing how acidic or alkaline something is. Pure water sits at 7, which is neutral. Below 7 is acidic, and vinegar is around 2 or 3. Above 7 is alkaline, and household degreasers and oven cleaners live up around 12 or 13.

The part that gets missed is that the scale is logarithmic. Every step is ten times the one before it. A cleaner at pH 11 is not a bit stronger than one at pH 9, it is about a hundred times more alkaline. That is why the gap between a neutral shampoo and a mildly alkaline one is much wider than the two numbers look.

Why anybody would make an alkaline car wash

Because alkaline works. Alkalinity breaks down oils, road film and traffic grime chemically, which means less contact, less agitation and a much faster job. For a commercial wash tunnel putting eighty cars through in a day that is exactly the right trade, and nobody in that queue has a coating to protect.

Your driveway is a different problem. You are washing one car, you already own a wash pad and two buckets, and the thing you are trying to protect cost you money.

What an alkaline wash actually costs you

Wax and sealant are the most exposed. A wax is measured in weeks at the best of times, and washing it with something aggressively alkaline shortens that noticeably.

Ceramic coatings are far tougher, and this is where the internet argument usually starts. A coating is not going to dissolve because you used the wrong shampoo once. What happens is slower and easier to miss: the hydrophobic behaviour sitting on top of it flattens off. The water stops beading the way it used to, the car starts looking flat between washes, and the owner decides the coating has failed.

Nine times out of ten it has not. We see that car come into the studio constantly. The coating is still there, it has just had the top layer scrubbed back, and it can usually be brought back in an afternoon. There is more on that in Looking After a Ceramic Coated Car.

Dish soap is the one to actually worry about

Every detailer tells you not to wash your car with dish soap and it sounds like brand protection. It is not.

Dish washing liquid is built to strip fats and oils off crockery, and it is alkaline and heavy on degreasers because that is the job. Used on a car it takes your protection off along with the dirt, and with repetition it dries out rubber seals and plastic trim. If that is what has been in the bucket, the honest advice is to assume there is nothing on your paint and start again from a clean base.

How to tell whether yours is doing the job

You cannot see pH and you should not have to take a label's word for it. Two things tell you what is happening on your own car.

  • Watch the water on the panel straight after a wash. If the car beaded tightly before the wash and sheets flat afterwards, something in that wash took the top layer off.
  • Watch how fast it gets dirty again. Protection that is intact holds dust and road film up on the surface where the next rinse carries it away. Stripped paint grabs everything and holds it.

Three things in your kit that should not be pH neutral

This is the part that gets lost once people latch on to the phrase. Neutral is right for the product that touches every panel of your car every fortnight. It is not a virtue on its own, and some jobs genuinely need chemistry.

  • Wheel cleaner. Brake dust is embedded metal, not surface dirt. WHEEL is a heavy duty degreaser at wheel cleaning strength, because a neutral product will not shift it and you will end up scrubbing a wheel far harder than you should have to.
  • Iron fallout remover. Iron Fallout Remover works by chemically dissolving embedded iron particles, which is why it runs purple down the panel. That is the reaction doing its job, not a stain.
  • Interior all purpose cleaner. APC lifts skin oils, sunscreen and makeup out of plastics and fabric, and it needs some alkalinity to do that at all.

So the rule is not neutral everywhere. It is neutral on the product that touches your paint every single wash, and the right chemistry everywhere else, used where it belongs and rinsed off properly.

What we use in the studio

WASH is the pH neutral shampoo we wash customer cars with five days a week. It doses at 10ml per litre, so a 15 litre bucket filled halfway takes about eight capfuls, and a 1 litre bottle is roughly twelve washes. It also foams through a lance, so one bottle covers the pre-wash as well.

SNOW is the pre-wash, citrus infused and also pH neutral, and it clings for up to ten minutes while it softens what is on the car. A pre-wash is the single best way to reduce how much dirt is still on the paint when your pad first touches it. If yours is coming out thin, that is usually the pressure washer, not the product.

CERAMIC WASH is pH neutral too and carries SiO2, so every wash tops the hydrophobics up rather than slowly wearing them down. If your car is coated or sealed, that is the one to reach for.

pH neutral is not a premium feature you pay extra for. It is the baseline for the one product that touches every panel of your car, every fortnight, for as long as you own it.

Get that part right and the wax, sealant or coating you paid for lasts about as long as it was sold to you as lasting. Get it wrong and you will replace it early, wonder why, and blame the coating.
